Build and Capture Task Sequence fails with error 0x00000004

This is an old and classical error, when trying to capture a Windows Image from SCCM 2012.

Your build and capture task sequence is returning the error 0x00000004 when running the step Prepare OS (sysprep).

image

image

If we take a closer look at the SMSTS.log we can see that the computer we are trying to capture is joined to the domain.

image

So let’s change it to a workgroup in the task sequence.

image

Please be aware that this can lead to other problems, while installing Application or Windows Updates, so take a look at this article as well:

UEFI and Windows 8.1 running on VMware Workstation 10

In order to play around with Windows 8.1 (x64) and UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) on VMware Workstation 10, we can add one line to the VMX file.

firmware = "efi"

image

After this change select Power On to BIOS

image

You should now see this dialog instead of the traditional BIOS.

image

After installing Windows 8.1 (x64) we will se that the BIOS Mode is UEFI.

image

And that Partition style is GPT:

image

So it’s very simple to enable UEFI support in VMware workstation.

This will of course also work on Windows 7 and as a bonus enable you to boot from a USB stick, so that you for example will be able to test SCCM USB bootable media in VMware.

Move Distribution Point Content library between drives SCCM 2012 R2

Now that we have access to the Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Toolkit http://larslohmann.blogspot.dk/2013/12/configuration-manager-toolkit-for.html, lets try to move Distribution point data from one drive to another.

In order to do this we need ContentLibraryTransfer.exe

ContentLibraryTransfer.exe -SourceDrive <current drive letter> -TargetDrive <new drive letter>

When you install the toolkit the file will typically be in C:\Program Files (x86)\ConfigMgr 2012 Toolkit R2\ServerTools

So start a command prompt as administrator and change the path:

image

Then lets try to move the content from the C drive to the D drive as shown here:

ContentLibraryTransfer.exe -SourceDrive C -TargetDrive D >c:\logs\move.log

image

You may want to pipe the output to a log file, this will make it easier to examine the result afterwards:

image

C drive before the transfer:

image

And C driver after the transfer, notice that the program has created a NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS file on the source drive:

Task Sequence fails with error 0x87d00269

You might see this error for example when you install applications in a task sequence when the computer is not domain joined (in a workgroup).

image

We can see here that the error arise when installing the first application:

image

Taking a closer look at SMSTS.log shows MP list missing in WMI, sending message to location service to retrieve MP list and retrying.

image

In this case the problem is that we are dealing with a workgroup computer and that it is not able to do normal MP lookup.

By using the SMSMP switch with the FQDN of the desired Management point we are able to fix this issue.

For more information about the SMSMP switch please see:
